A simple brand guideline for small businesses

A small business does not need a brand book dozens of pages long. A few pages on the logo, colours, fonts and examples are enough to keep your team and printers aligned. Here is what to include.

The logo and its clear space

The first page should show every logo version, such as full, horizontal and symbol-only, with the required clear space and the smallest readable size. Include examples of incorrect use, such as stretching, recolouring or placing it on a busy photo, so everyone can see what to avoid.

Colours and fonts with usable codes

List colour codes for print and screen, such as CMYK, HEX and Pantone if you have it, and say which colours are primary, secondary and background. For fonts, give the name, weights and examples for headings and body text. With this, a new designer or printer can carry on immediately.

Examples of everyday pieces

Finish with examples of pieces the business really uses, such as social posts, business cards, the shop sign and product labels. Examples help non-designers understand the logo, colours and fonts faster than reading rules. A good guideline is updated whenever the brand adds new kinds of work.
